ISO Opinions on non-benign stinging insects

What do forum members think of the presence of a hornet/wasp nest in general and, specifically, should we fear its effect on our hive? I have a nest app. two hundred feet from my hive, and my general feeling is live and let live, but if there's a chance they'll harm my girls I shall be the wrath of God.
Follow-up: How do you destroy a nest with the least amount of harm to self? (It is not lost on me that I own protective equipment, and it seems that said destruction would be an activity best done at night.)
